How a signal becomes public

Fetch

Retrieve the USGS Significant Earthquakes, Past Week feed and preserve source identifiers, coordinates and timestamps.

Validate

Reject malformed geometry, impossible magnitudes, unsupported URLs and records that do not match the expected source shape.

Separate

Publish validated USGS source records, but keep GDACS flood and landslide discovery records private until a human review supports publication.

04

Explain

Show source status, timing, location and direct links without turning evidence into an alert, prediction or safety instruction.

Limits and labels

What is public today?

The Latest view contains records from the USGS Significant Earthquakes, Past Week feed. “Major” is a DisasterSignal display filter for magnitude 5.5 or greater within that feed; it is not an emergency classification. The source status shown on a USGS record—such as automatic or reviewed—belongs to USGS, not to DisasterSignal.

What remains private?

GDACS flood and landslide records are used only to find candidates that may deserve review. A GDACS flood type is retained as flood and is never silently relabelled as flash flood. No discovery becomes a hotspot merely because an upstream alert colour is orange or red.
